International Deaf Awareness Week 2024

The International Deaf Awareness Week is celebrated annually. The 2024 ‘Sign up for Sign Language Rights’ theme emphasized the importance of recognizing and supporting the rights of the Deaf community. Free a Girl’s World Network organized this year’s celebration in Kenya and celebrated at Kuja Primary School for the Deaf and Kuja Secondary School for the Deaf, Rongo Sub-County Migori County.

The objectives of the event were to create awareness and work with the community to break stigma and discrimination against people with disabilities, especially the Deaf community; to advocate for Sign Language Rights, to empower Deaf children through mentorship, to provide digital literacy skills to Deaf students and Deaf people living in the community, and to provide medical assessment services to Deaf children and other members of the community living with a disability. The one-week event that started on the 16th and ended on the 21st of September drew support from the community, individuals, and 21 partners including government and non-governmental organizations from Migori County and the Republic of Kenya. Empowering Change In Gender Reproductive Health Education

This past week, our organization, Free a Girl’s World Network, as part of the RH Network, had the privilege of attending a pivotal conference held at Lake Naivasha Simba Lodges to discuss the Gender Reproductive Health Education Bill. This important piece of legislation is set to be tabled in the Nakuru County Assembly in the next two weeks.

As the Head of Programs at Free a Girl’s World Network, I had the honor of attending this conference. Our discussions centered around the critical need for comprehensive and accessible reproductive health education. By advocating for this bill, we aim to ensure that everyone in Nakuru County has the knowledge and resources to make informed decisions about their health and future.

Advocacy is at the heart of what we do. We believe in the power of education to transform lives and communities. Together with other passionate advocates, we are committed to pushing for policies that protect and empower all individuals.

Stay tuned as we continue to champion this cause and work towards a future where gender reproductive health education is a fundamental right for all.
